Common symptoms that are caused by hormonal problems
The symptoms that are linked to hormonal disorders are very nondescript i.e. period disorders, fertility problems, fatigue. If these symptoms are tenacious or getting worse one should seek professional help.

Endocrinology is a subspecialty of internal medicine and gynecology that examines and treats hormone disorders and hormone producing organs (glands) such as the thyroid glands, parathyroid glands, adrenal glands, pituitary gland, pancreas, testis and ovaries.

Common endocrine disorders

1. Hypothyroidism It is the most often seen thyroid gland disorder where the body doesn’t have enough thyroid hormones.

Most common symptoms are: fatigue, weakness, mood swings and disorders, irritability, difficulty sleeping, attention deficit, xeroderma, hair loss, weight gain (with healthy diet and exercise), constipation, period disorders, decreased libido, miscarriage.
These symptoms can affect our every day lives and affect our personal relationships.
Subclinical hypothyroidism (elevated TSH but normal thyroid hormone levels) is often found during laboratory check-ups even without these symptoms.

2. Hyperthyroidism It is an illness that causes the thyroid gland to over-produce its hormones way more than the body need.

In case of hyperthyroidism patients can experience palpitation, quick pulse, arrhythmia, hypertension, diarrhea, weight loss (with increased appetite), hair loss, skin and nail lesions, oedema, irritability, anger, insomnia, heat intolerance, increased perspiration.
The augmentation of the thyroid gland can be found in hypo- and in hyperthyroidism as well as in goiter, carcinoma and adenomas.

3. Insulin insensitivity In this case our cells need more and more insulin in order to get to the glucose they need to function.

The symptoms are very variable and this disorder often linked to other syndromes like PCOS or hypothyroidism. Most common problems are: fatigue after meals, frequent feeling of hunger, vertigo, tremors, obesity, difficulty losing weight, acne, seborrhea, increased perspiration, sleep problems, stress, anxiousness, headache, depression. Many cases it is revealed while examining causes of infertility and period disorders.

4. Tumors in hormonal glands They can be benign and malign as well. In these cases the glands enlarge and sometimes lumps can be sensed especially on the neck.

These symptoms together or alone can sign an endocrine disorder but does not prove it. If you have any of these symptoms please turn to an endocrinologist, in our clinic Dr. Dora Oláh.

Dr. Oláh Dóra

Dr. Dora Olah’s internal medicine consulting hours. I got my degree from medicine at Semmelweis University Faculty of Medicine in 2013. The internal medicine specialty captured me during the first years of university with its complexity and mysteries.
I always aspired to find out and treat the problems, illnesses behind the symptoms and to do that I learnt the best way is to treat every patient individually, holistic and as a partner during the process of getting better.
The internal medicine is one of the most ancient and complex part of medicine, for the influence of my mentors and teachers during my scholar years the endocrinology subspecialty had been in the limelight of my work ever since.

I always put emphasis on detailed and thorough medical check-up and my treatment options are as individualistic as possible to fit the patient’s needs the most.
To reach the correct diagnosis and to use the adequate treatment it is indispensable to have a relaxed, reliant atmosphere during patient-doctor visits that being the case we can discuss every delicate detail that can bring us closer to the root of the problem.
